in the last weekAllocating an hour+ of your time is definitely a worthwhile experience. The people staffing the place are certainly very enthusiastic and want you to be immersed in the history of Music in Penang. I would highly recommend anyone that has a passing interest in history, music, dance or just Penang in general to explore this place.

2 months agoLocating the place takes a bit of conscious effort if you're unfamiliar with the maze of shops and small overhead directional signs inside Komtar. This place is quite a treasure trove documenting the history of music in Penang, and houses some good musical memorabilia. You're taken on a guided tour and are allowed to stay on as long as you wish to browse further. You're allowed to handle some of the musical instruments and displays. I wish it could be more well-funded (government-funded now) to allow for better exposure and opportunities to promote Penang and Malaysian music history and development. Elaine the guide and Paul the curator are friendly and obviously passionate about what they're doing here. This was the highlight of my recent visit to Penang although I'm Malaysian and had lived in the island before and visited it many times. ??? Penang House of Music! To learn more you can buy the book written by Paul that comes with a CD filled with lovely music. Truly an educational, insightful and worthwhile visit.

3 months agoDefinately one of the top places to visit in Penang. A treasure trove of memorabilia showcasing the evolution of the music scene in Penang. Vast collection of instruments and sound clips. Elaine who is one of the guises at the museum gave us a guided tour. I was very impressed by her passion for music. The owner mike who is a musician spoke to is and gave us insights into the hey days of the penang music scene from the 40’s to the 70’s. One of the highlights was a virtual reality concert that was filmed back in the 40’s. Wish I could rate this place more than 5 stars.

6 months agoThis is such a wonderful museum, a real labour of love. It basically tells the history of Penang through its music. It's interactive, informative, entertaining and has just so many layers of historical and cultural significance. We had the pleasure of being taken on a superb guided tour by Kevin Theseira and got to meet the awesome founder Paul Augustin, too. It's all painstakingly and rigorously researched and presented very engagingly. And the entire collection will give you an inspiring view of the sexy, super-diverse and organically multicultural history of Malaysia that is often obscured by the news headlines about the country's current political landscape. Be sure to check out the shop as well!
