Introduction
Situated to the north east of Butterworth in Malaysia, Mengkuang dam is a very scenic location, with breathtaking lake view against hills as the backdrop. Recreational activities are offered by the park near the dam area.

What to Expect?

The park was re-open to public in December 2020 after extensive renovation and upgrade work to the dam. The dam now comes with a proper recreational facilities and park for public visit.

The park in the dam area is a popular place for recreation. It is spacious and suitable for people to enjoy a brisk walk or even jog. The main draw for visitors is its park featuring a scenic landscape with jogging trails (the best is the 10km trail that goes past orchards and rubber plantations), it has at least 300 visitors a day.

It contains up to 23.6 billion litres of water making it the largest dam in Penang. Officially opened in 1985, it is also called Empangan Mengkuang and the 81ft dam has a water-cache area of 3.9sqkm.

Penang International Dragon Boat Festival
Mengkuang Dam is also one of the venues for the annual Penang International Dragon Boat Festival. The festival is a fiesta of colour and noise, in which traditionally-built boats race through the waters of this dam, the boats are cheered on by enthusiastic spectators. The noisy and colourful festival is livened not only by enthusiastic spectators but also helmsmen that beat traditional drums aboard their vessels as their boats race to the finish line.

in the last weekThe view is very nice, environment is good, can bring your family go there. The parking area have a lot of place. Not worry that. You can prepare your umbrella, towel, drinking water because that is no rooting at there.

a month agoLovely experience here. Would be even better if we came earlier tho. Scenery is great and the Ambience is really calming. Almost don't even worry about parking folks, it'll never be an issue!

2 months agoRevisited this place after 6-7 years of gap. A lot of changes after it was closed for renovation. Nice place for jogging and walking exercise with family.

3 months agoChanged a lot since the last renovation, you enter the running lane at the middle. There is left and right road along the dam, and there is no more jungle hiking path.
The total length of the road (left and right) is 5.20KM recorded while I am jogging. Happy jogging people~ There’s no place for picnic anymore but it is still a beautiful place to hang around 😁
