Introduction

Spanning 325 ha, Taman Negara Tanjung Piai is the smallest but most visited amongst Johor’s five national parks. It’s certainly a great place to spend a day, observe the biodiversity, take in the views and marvel at the intricate relationship between man and nature.

What to Expect?

From a geographical perspective, Tanjung Piai (lit. Cape of the Golden Leather Fern) occupies a very special corner of the world. At a latitude of 1°16.00’ North, the cape constitutes the southernmost point of mainland Asia, or to be more precise, continental Eurasia. It is also one of the few places where two neighbouring countries (Singapore and Indonesia) can be seen simultaneously.

The national park covers 926 hectares but the area accessible to the public is fairly small and visitors are required to stick to the wooden boardwalks and not try to walk in the swampy mudflats. The wooden walkboard and planks that span a few kilomèter long are the main navigation path for visitor to explore the mangrove area.

Tanjung Piai is the smallest but most visited amongst Johor’s five national parks. It’s certainly a great place to spend a day, observe the biodiversity, take in the views and marvel at the intricate relationship between man and nature. The park has ample facilities for visitors which include a 1.2 km network of boardwalks, a visitor complex that houses an information gallery, as well as a unique elevated campsite within the mangroves.

The landmark of Tanjung Piai Pontian Johor is a monument made from eco-friendly concrete that reaches a height of 20 meters and only 10 centimeters wide. The monument is grey in color and reflects the muddy flatlands and twist mangroves that stem from the forest floor.

There are two ferns of an indigenous fern on the monument that symbolize how Tanjung Piai gets its name, the Paku Piai Raya fern, which is native to Tanjung Piai’s forests.

The park closes at 5pm but night walks and firefly trails can be organized by prior arrangement.

There are a number of viewing platforms and observation towers for bird watchers and nature lovers to obtain a better view.

History

Tanjung Piai (Johor) National Park was established in 1997 to protect this unique site; in particular, the intertidal mangroves and mudflats that line the cape along with the important ecosystem services that they provide. In 2003, Tanjung Piai National Park was recognised by the Ramsar Convention as a Ramsar Site, or Wetlands of International Importance.

Since the park’s inception, it has been an ongoing battle by all involved to protect its mangrove forest which has faced serious erosion issues due to strong waves generated by thousands of tankers that sail past each year, as well as the occasional pollution events from oil spills and illegal dumping of ballast water. With the installation of offshore breakwaters, coupled with intensive mangrove replanting, the tide has now turned, and many areas that were previously eroded have now been re-colonised by healthy mangroves, and the park is now in better condition that it has ever been.

    in the last week

It was a surprise visit on a rainy day on a Rau Lu weekday. The place is located in Tg Piai and the roads to this reserve forest are in good condition. It takes roughly 2 hours to reach here from JB.

The forest is well maintained and kept clean for visitors.

The entrance fee for Malaysians is very minimal and the staffs are quite friendly.

    Certainly worth the visit

A paid to enter park. Priced differently for citizens and non citizen. Malaysians, please bring along your identification card to enjoy the citizen's benefit.

A place not to be taken lighly of. Not every country has this tip and Malaysia is lucky to have this. BE PREPARED TO WALK & BRING ALONG UMBRELLA/CAP. It can get quite hot when walking.

This national park mainly focuses on the swamp ecosystem and its biodiversity.

An educational place for GEOGRAPHY and BIOLOGY lovers. Good place to share with students/family&friends about the ecosystem that is around here.

    Having 3 different pathways towards
    1. The tip of the southern most mainland asia
    2. The 3 jetty...u will be at the location of indonesia/singapore&malaysia
    3. The fishing jetty

Each pathway walk will take a good 20mins walk. As you will be walking on stilts and wooden pathways... please take care of the safety of your own children. Not encourage to run around or make a lot of noise.

There is an education/ briefing centre to inform what to see and what to expect.

Mangroves are important but attractive places to visit and I think this National
Park needs to up its maintenance game to service damage walk ways which hampers movement and repair a damaged section of the trail so paying guest can access it. The 5pm closing time means people cannot access it during the most ideal evening period.

A place where you can see mangroves in nature. The walkways are on wooden planks. It is wheel chair accessible. Don't expect much for a nice toilet, as the only one is under maintenance. The weather can be very hot under mid-day sun, so carry an umbrella with you.

It is an ideal educational area for you to walk around and educate your kids on natural ecosystem. Hope that local authority can invest a little bit on facility and upgrade the standard. Thought we can see some changes vs past few years but it still can be better to attract tourist
