Introduction
Located within the famous Stadthuys building, this museum focuses on the city's fascinating history and ethnography. Exhibits include a recreation of a rumak Melaka (traditional Melekan house), dioramas of cultural ceremonies and displays of traditional costumes and music.
What to Expect?
The ethnography section of the museum portrays the lifestyle and culture of various communities and sub-communities of Melaka including the Malays, the Chinese, the Indians, the Portuguese, the Baba and Nyonya, the Chetti and Chitty communities.
Other exhibits include items used in traditional wedding ceremonies, kitchen utensils, musical instruments and collections of ancient porcelain ware, weapons, stamps and ancient currencies.
The first floor of the Historical and Ethnography Museum is devoted to the history of Melaka which in reality is the early history of Malaysia. It covers the period from the founding of Melaka to the establishment of independent Federation of Malaya. The exhibits provide a true reflection of early Melaka, its existence as a colony, the struggle for independence and the rapid development of post-independence Melaka.
Upstairs the Admiral Cheng Ho Gallery displays a collection of paintings depicting scenes from the colonial era.
One admission ticket gives access to this and all other museums in the complex: the 17th-century Governor's Museum (where the Chief Ministers of Melaka lived); the Democratic Government Museum, with informative displays on the anti-colonial movement, Independence and the Japanese Occupation; a Literature Museum focusing on Melaka's role in the development of Malaysian literature; and an Education Museum.
Free guided tours of the main museum take place at 10.30am and 2.30pm on Saturday and Sunday.

2 months agoA must visit to learn about the history of Melaka and the monuments you still see today.
Good illustrations and plenty of interesting objects and information.
Personally I liked the personal stories of Melaka people with Dutch roots. Quite fascinating family histories.
As a history lover I would have been perfectly fine with more information still and detailed coverage of the Dutch period in particular (there is comparatively more on the Portuguese). -

9 months agoAuthorities should put more effort to make the museum look less than a haunted ghost house. Dusty and lighting is poor making it look bad! Ticket is cheap but still, not worth to waste time in it. Please update all the presentation materials

a month agoNice gallery but the signage to Gallery Cheng Ho (Zheng He) can be improved. The signs in the main musuem point to Gallery Cheng Ho but in fact Gallery Cheng Ho is in a separate building that is not connected to the main building.
To access Gallery Cheng Ho, need to go to the garden area and find the white Cheng Ho statue first. Then, take the stairs on the right side for the entrance to the Gallery.
Other than the signages, the musuem is very well equipped and descriptions of the historic events are clear. -

a year agoVery valuable museum, only 20RM can visit 5 museums. Many parts here, history, Zheng He, music, education, and different stages of Malaysia's history. However, the planning and location of the different museums are very massive. You can't find any map or institution to tell you how to go to the next museum.
