Introduction

Don’t be fooled by its unremarkable exterior. Inside, Ipoh’s Geology Museum is a modern museum, thoughtfully curated to present the histories and stories of the very foundation of Malaysia’s geographical make-up.

What to Expect?

The museum occupies an area of 343 m2. The building forms an integral part with the Minerals and Geoscience Department Complex of Ipoh.

Acting as a major centre of geology and geoscience in Malaysia, it consists of seven zones labelled A to G. Exhibits in each of the areas cover the history of the museum, dinosaur fossils and mining activities as well as minerals, crystals and gemstones and their uses. Other parts detail the more industrialised side of geology and mining. Expect to find well-organised displays and easy-to-read information boards in one of the more educational museums in Ipoh.

The museum houses a collection of over 600 samples of minerals, classified according to chemical content and structure. The museum is well known for its exhibits of tin ore, including the best specimen of cassiterite in the world. There is also an impressive collection of fossils, precious stones and rock specimens.

Each of these 7 exhibit zone is a brilliant showcase of various historical natural objects, with in-depth information to really capture your attention and imagination. From rocks and minerals to realistic models of dinosaurs, the museum aims to educate all visitors about Malaysia’s geo-heritage.

Young museum goers will appreciate educational games like snakes and ladders, and adult guests will no doubt walk away with a lot more knowledge and appreciation of Malaysia’s geology.

I love geology so this place was heaven. I love the rocks on display and the cooling aircon. I wish I could have stayed longer. The dinosaur was a little scary... though. Free entry too and the lady at the front counter was really chill so yay
