Introduction

A trip to Kuala Selangor would be incomplete without exploring the uniqueness and miracles of the Kuantan Village Fireflies found in the midst of mangrove trees in this small villages. Visitors would experience riding on a traditional sampan (small boat) down the Selangor River and observe the fireflies in close proximity.

What to Expect?

Kampung Kuantan is know for its fireflies (or Kelip-kelip, as it fondly called by the local) that dwell along Sg Selangor river banks and feeding on the Berembang trees (mangrove trees) that grow well in brackish water. The mangrove trees with its scientific name, Sonneratia Casolaris, can be found until 8 km upstream and 18 km downstream to Kuala Selangor.

Bask in the bioluminescence of thousands of fireflies as they do their mating dance around the berembang trees along the Selangor River at Malaysia’s Kampung Kuantan Firefly Park, in Kuala Selangor. Each species of firefly has a different light pattern and together, as they swarm around their chosen branches, they create a symphony of light in the mangrove swamps—one of Mother Nature’s most spectacular displays.

The Kampung Kuantan Firefly Park adventure began in the 1970s when a local entrepreneur foresaw the commercial potential of this magical event. The project was later entrusted to the Kuala Selangor District Council, who has continued its development to accommodate the increasing number of tourists.

Here, visitors get to enjoy a ride on a sampan (traditional, non-motorized wooden boat) along the great bends and curves of Selangor River to witness up-close the fireflies’ mesmerizing displays.

Travelling on a sampan enables you to get closer to the action and at the same time, helps reduce air, water and noise pollution, all of which may adversely affect the insects’ natural habitat.

Due to high demand especially during the holiday season, visitors are advised to make bookings in advance to avoid disappointment.

For maximum visibility, the best time to experience Kuala Selangor’s fireflies is slightly after 8.00pm on a clear, moonless night. Any later than that, and the fireflies may have found a mate, causing them to stop flashing.

What to bring – Sport shoes or shoes with rubber soles are recommended when visiting Kampung Kuantan. Also remember to pack plenty of mosquito repellent. Flash photography is strictly prohibited as this may disrupt and confuse the fireflies, who communicate by emitting lights from their abdomen.

A quote from the guide that I can't forget:

"Fireflies are very sensitive to the nature's delicate balance. If the temperature changes, they die. If the water is polluted, they die. If the tree (nest) is disturbed, they die.

Suffice to say, if you don't see fireflies anymore, than the earth is dying"

No frill old school firefly observation. Operated by old “Pakcik” with hand powered boat . The “sampan” is a max capacity of 4 adult. So able to mix child and adult . One fix rate for 1 sampan RM60.

Service include close encounter with firefly. Just remember to time your visit to start after 8pm and go during +/- 3 days of the 1st day of the lunar calendar month to avoid any moonlight from stealing the limelight.

Absolutely magical experience. It was the sort of thing a person dreams about. The boat towers were so quiet so didn’t disturb the firefly’s at all. I really recommend this place to anyone travelling in the area. But make sure you wear bug spray !! And a lot of it.

No information in the internet about the price and timing, Then, finally i found this at the entrance.

60RM for local, 100RM for forigner for one boat. The last trip is 22:30.

All boat is with a rower. lots of fireflies. 20 min trip. it is just nice. 20 min is just good (it is like jungle cruse in the disney land). We are a group of 5 including 3 kids and the youngest one is 6 years old. They let us in together in one boat.
