What to Expect?

Also known as the Kilim Karst Geoforest Park, this 100 square kilometer area in Langkawi is a nature reserve and a collection of geo-sites full of amazing flora & fauna, and stunning geological formations like mammoth limestone rocks, fossils, caves, lagoons, beaches and seascapes. The whole area is administered and protected by the Peninsular Malaysia Forestry Department. It is part of the larger Langkawi Geopark and one of the biggest hot spots of Eco tourism in the entire region.

The beauty of Kilim lies in its diverse natural geological, biological and cultural resources with high heritage value. It is also unique because it's the only place in Malaysia where one can find a coexistence of coastal karst and mangrove ecosystems.

A place with an ancient geological heritage, countless natural wonders, home to a myriad of flora and fauna, and a vibrant local community of Kilim Village.

The Experience - River Boat Tour

The approach to the Kilim Geopark is through the Kilim river. You will need to take a tour on a motor boat that starts from the Kilim Jetty or the Tanjung Rhu bay area both located at the north eastern end of Langkawi. A guided boat tour would be ideal to appreciate all the attractions in Kilim Geopark. The Kilim Geopark area comprises of the river basins of Kilim, Kisap and Air Hangat along with several islands including Langgun and Tanjung Dendang.

The boat ride will initially take you along the Kilim river with dense green mangroves (also known as wetland mangroves) on one side and gigantic limestone rocks on the other rising from the river bed. Some of these limestone rocks that look like mountains, have been formed some 500 million years back. The mangroves serve to protect the shoreline from the sea and prevent soil erosion by forming a barricade.

The Bat Cave

The most popular stops include Gua Kelawar or "bat cave" home to 3,000 bats and shell clusters revealing water levels from 5,000 years ago; Tanjung Rhu beach with its white beach sands and calm waters; Gua Cherita, or "Cave of Legends" where a Chinese princess is said to have been held captive by the Phoenix in a local fable; the floating fish farm for a tour or seafood lunch; and wild eagle spotting from the boat.

Highlights

- Visit scenic sites throughout the Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark such as the Tanjung Rhu and Kisap rivers
- Explore the southern part of Langkawi by boat and discover secluded coves and beaches
- See limestone cliffs, fiords and sea stacks majestically rise like ancient temples out of the water
- Get a chance to seee bizarre fish that are able to walk on land, dolphins, kingfishers, and brahminy kites

Nice outdoor activity. Chance to see mangroves closely and boating by them in a motorboat is a unique experience. During boat tours, I also visited crocodile cave, Eagle sightseeing, and floating fish farms.

Amazing shared guided boat tour of the natural wildlife. We saw eagles, snakes, crabs and monkeys. Ate local lunch at the fishing farm. Ending the tour with a tranquil beach visit and swim.

Lovely, scenic boat trip through the park. Can stop at multiple points for some activites during the ride ex bat cave, eagle feeding, fish and sting ray feeding (in captivity), great views of the mangroves, flora and fauna like monkeys up close. The tide and weather can affect the trip. Some parts can get extremely shallow too. Expect 1.5 to 2 hours time for this and have the option to do this trip at different points along the river (some a little more expensive than the others if a popular boaring point).

Far more beautiful and exciting than expected. The boat rider allowed our kids to drive few minutes and they loved it. The eagle feeding was spectacular and beyond words. The rider explained various mountains as well.
